If you’ve followed along for any length of time, you may have noticed the massive circular-saw-looking chainring hanging on the wall behind Seth’s workbench. At first glance, it looks like something you would see at a sawmill. However, it is, in fact, a 74-tooth chainring.
After the chainring was used in the towing experiment, I thought it was just a piece of question-provoking wall art, never to be used again. Then Seth started talking about the idea of making a low-gear rock-crawler of a bike and bringing it out of retirement. As you’ll see in the video, plenty of issues come from trying to climb up something steep when you’re working with slow to no speed. It’s challenging enough using standard mountain bike gearing with a 32-52…take the 36-74 with a Pinion gearbox that provides nearly 100% more low-end, and you’re just about certain to topple over.
