This $2K Motor Turns Any MTB Into an e-bike Using Your Rotor

Technology has come a long way...
Video: Seth // Edit: Curtis // Words Below: Daniel

10-15 years ago, e-bike technology went through a renaissance. It was finally getting good, or so we thought. It wasn’t just junk anymore - large brands were buying in and investing in the technology in a big way, and it went from absolutely terrible to great in what seemed to be overnight. At the time, I worked at Specialized, and we had just launched the brand’s first e-bike, the Turbo. VIP dealers and media flew in from around the world to a few different locations to ride the latest and greatest. The campaign slogan was, “It’s you, only faster.” I was in Miami and everyone was given a red cape with a red Specialized “S” on it, and we rode all around South Beach like hooligans having a grand time. It was a lot of fun. The bike had a hub motor and was quick, smooth, and quite heavy, especially for a “townie” bike, which was not too dissimilar from Specialized’s Sirrus, but it was rad.
